This workshop will introduce a Canadian audience to the most recent project in the series Target Autonopop by Hamburg-based artist Michel Chevalier. Specifically, the artist will introduce Unlimited liability, an experimental and socially-combative "store" project. Pivotal to the workshop is a detailed group reading of a radical statement from 1975: Michael Corris' essay "Yet another palace revolt in the banana republic?" published in the legendary but long-out-of-print magazine of New York Art & Language, THE FOX. Participants will reflect upon and work through the ideas and impulses that emerge from both the text and from Unlimited liability, in spite of the 30 years between them. This process will also be the basis of the actions and "production" explored in this unconventional workshop.
Hamburg-based Michel Chevalier has been active in non-commodity art projects for over 10 years: media festivals (Cinematexas, Impakt/Utrecht, Monitoring/Kassel), artist-run spaces and initiatives (Westwerk/Hamburg, NGBK/Berlin, Biennale de Paris) and political art projects (Summit of Interventionist Art/Geneva, Capitalism Reloaded/Berlin, Let's Remake the World/Copenhagen). He is the initiator of «target: autonopop», and member of collective projects such as Culture and Social Movement Archive, and the music group UR! GELLER.
